“Affordable” shouldn’t be code for “lame.” Consider the Hook, a thoroughly modern, ridiculously fun, and yes, affordable rig.

  • Free Same-Day Shipping
  • Free Assembly and Pick Up
  • Hassle Free Returns

If you could only have one bike — just one — the Hook would be the perfect choice. For starters, it’s capable of, well, just about anything you have the nerve for. That includes quick rips on your local trails, all-day suffer fests that have you pedaling away into terra incognita, and everything in between.

We’ve equipped the Hook with the same low-slung, modern frame as its well-heeled Line and Sync’r siblings. Long in the front, short in the back, low and maneuverable — the Hook is deft and precise on tight trails yet rock steady when you are going Mach Chicken down the steepest descents.

The most impressive thing about the Hook, however, might just be its price. We kept the price tag from burning a hole in your checking account by equipping the Hook with awesome yet affordable components, including a plush 120mm fork, simple and effective single-ring drivetrain, powerful disc brakes, and quick-rolling 27.5” wheels.

Love this thing!

I was really skeptical about the quality vs. price on this bike, but after I had it built up (by a reputable mechanic, not me) I'm amazed. It is super durable, I love the single front chainring, and the suspension is great. I don't understand the problems that some other folks are having - maybe they took a shot at building it up themselves? I've never dropped a chain, and shifting is super smooth. I would buy this bike again in a heartbeat.

the bike is just so clean, the handle bars are so wide but it improves handling like you wouldn't believe. it is one of the best entry level hardtail out there. it is almost like a plus bike the tires are wider than you would expect, but they are so grippy. it cat walks like a beats and no hands is a breas. overall it is pretty good on the road. i have not taken it out on the trails yet but i am looking forward to it. people are saying that they cain falls off alot and i agree but i have found a way to prevent that from happening just wont shift into 1st or 8th gear fast go slow and i find the cain will not fall off. over all it is the best bike i have ever owned. you will not regret buying the DIAMONDBACK HOOK!!! PS it is way green in real life.

Solid Entry Bike

Review by Bone
Overall Quality

This is considered my entry into the sport. I know there are a ton of bikes out there around this price range, but this one stuck out to me. After receiving my bike, assembly was quick and easy. A minor tweak to the brakes, and the rear derailleur (thanks DB for the videos) and I was good to go. Living in coastal mid Atlantic, the 1x8 is OK for the job, however this is my first upgrade I plan to do (1x11). I need a little more range for those climbs. The fork is OK, and expected for the price. 120mm travel is nice.. The geometry is great, and this will be a bike I hold on to for a while. Don't let "the internet" tell you its a waste of money to buy entry level. This one is set up for long term with its great geometry.

I removed a star because of the 1x8, really that's it. I would have preferred a 1x10 at least.

TLDR: Great entry level bike, with room to mod and grow. The color is a head turner and looks great in person. 1x8 is a bit lacking but a 1x11 can be done sub 175$ (assuming you can do it yourself, which you can). I'm very satisfied.

Excellent Value - Just buy it and ride.

This is my second Diamondback bicycle, the first being an early 1980's chrome Silver Streak that was my prized childhood possession until it was stolen. The result of hard work mowing lawns and a hard lesson about quality bicycle locks and humanity in general. Here's what I think about the Hook: Perfect execution of a "real" entry level trail capable mountain bike. This is not a big-box chain store bike that only looks the part, this is a very real and capable machine. It's not meant to impress your buddies with it's spec sheet and some super precious "Vibranium" groupset. It's meant to impress your friends with it's value and design. Diamondback did a great job with the Hook, Line, and Sync'r models. Great geometry and frame design as well as a few house brand quality components that work well (bars, stem, wheels). I bought the 2018 Hook as it was "enough" for me to get back into MTB and allow me some budget for tinkering and repairs. A 1x crankset and chain guide is very uncommon in this category, but still super appreciated. The SRAM x3 / x4 derailleur and shifting are serviceable and easily upgraded as you progress and start braking things (it is meant for the trail after all). The brakes are mechanical but solid and reliable after some adjustment. If Diamondback could spec a simple air fork (SR Suntour XCR 32 Air is an inexpensive alternative), a hydraulic disc brake setup (Tektro and Shimano both make crazy inexpensive variety's), and any better option over a square taper bottom bracket.....Wow, this bike would become a sales juggernaut! As it is, it is still an amazing value. I've had it a month and I've replaced the fork with the Suntour listed above and it's a game changer. Nothing was broken on the original fork, I just had the opportunity to upgrade cheaply. I'll be running the mechanical brakes for a bit longer as they are doing exactly what I ask and the feel is good at the lever, although it's not a 1-finger affair. I'll use the square taper BB until I destroy it or until I've found a good alternative for low $. I did my research and I knew what I was buying ahead of time and I'm completely happy with this bike. You should buy from DB with confidence. p.s. Check out Seth's Bike Hacks on YouTube for more DB goodness and a couple of videos about proper entry level bikes. If you search, you'll see he spec'd a Hook for the female rider in his 3-part series title "Mountain Biking explained". Good luck watching that video and not wanting to go immediately on a ride! Overall, good job Diamondback!

Best Budget Beginner Trail Bike

Review by Izaar Thorne
Overall Quality

100% satisfied with my purchase. This is a true beginners trail bike built with quality components. The paint job was amazing, pictures will not do it justice. Took about 30 minutes to put together and ride. I haven't tried on a trail since it has been raining since I got it, but we'll be reviewing it once I do also. I did manage to ride it about 7 miles on street and had no issues or complaints. It is very stable due too it's aggressive geometry and makes you feel very confident on the bike. I want to personally thank Seth's Bikes Hacks, Singletrack Sampler, BKXC, Phill Kmetz as well as MTB Daily Rider, all you-tubers which at some point or another recommended the brand or the bike.

Thank you to Diamondback for promptly answering all of my questions in regards to their mountain bikes before I made my purchase and providing such an excellent "upgradable" trail bike a great price point.

Not impressed for the money

Review by Steven smith

I was really excited about getting this new bike after being away from biking for a few years. When I received the bike my cassette was all bent up and causing problems with the chain popping off and making noise. So I went to my local bike shop had a new cassette installed. Excited I hurried home and started riding around my neighborhood ( litterally all flat ) and my crank starts making a nasty popping creeking noise. Took the petals off lubed everything possible put it back together and is still making this noise. The front fork is also very poor and pogo like. For the $650 I paid for this bike I'm completely disappointed I haven't rode it 2 miles yet and I'm having several issues. Diamondback probably lost a customer out of me

New to it, but this fits the bill!

Review by Joe S.
Overall Quality

I'm new to mountain biking so i took a lot of time out to research what was best to buy for the right price. Many Youtubers threw this name out there and gave a lot of credit towards the hook, so naturally I decided to order it. Been out on the trails about 10 times now and really getting comfortable hopping terrain and driving corners. Lots of fun to be had with this bike and DB def has a returning customer now! Only downside to the bike would be the seat, its pretty uncomfortable but that's an easy fix so it still deserves five stars.

Great bike to get back into biking

Review by S
Overall Quality

This bike did not impress me much after assembly. Then I took it on the trail. I am getting back into biking after 15 years and this is a great starting point. Fast, nimble, and easy to climb and decent with. The best part is that everything is made to be upgraded. So the more I get back into things the more I can upgrade. Taking off a star because of the mechanical brakes. Other bikes in this price range with comparable components has Shimano M315 hydraulic brakes. But you can add them which I will. Otherwise it is a fun bike to ride and great for anyone wanting to get into mountain biking without the huge financial commitment.

This bike is a boss when it comes to the trails. I got this bike last year and I have absolutely loved it! It can handle almost anything. The only problem I have had with this bike is that the second day I had it the derailleur got stuck in the spokes, but Diamondback gave me a new one and I haven't had any problem since. Overall this bike is great!

Great Bike for the price

Review by Wilsbrur
Overall Quality

I have had my hook for about a month and a half now and I have put about 100miles on it. I ride every chance I get. I am over 40yrs old 170lbs and 5'7" tall. I used to do a far bit of trail and down hill riding when I was in high school but it has been many years since I have been on a bike. I purchased this bike as a budget bike because I was unsure I would still be able to ride like I wanted to. This bike is very user friendly. I love the 1X drive train (although I am looking into upgrading it to a 1 X 11 not sure if I can) It is my first bike with disk brakes, they are mechanical and when you really need them will require two fingers to get you stopped but they will do the job. The frame geometry is beautiful especially for a shorter rider, although I do plan on investing in a dropper seat post which the bike is equipped for the cable routing. I have the orange paint job which I do like better than the current color however I did notice they did upgrade the tires.
If I have one complaint which kept me from giving the bike 5 stars it is the front shock. I understand this shock is used on a lot of bikes in this price point however it has very little if any adjustability and spring rate is not ideal for my riding style (yes with this great bike I have developed a riding style in a month and half) and weight. I plan to upgrade it to a Rockshox Recon. however this is difficult on this bike to because of the strait head tube.
Overall I love this bike and look forward to riding it, tinkering with it, and pushing myself on it. I am very happy I purchased it and will be riding it for awhile before I progress to a new bike and even then I will keep my hook as my +1 bike.
If you are looking for a budget mountain bike, a beginner bike that will grow with you, or just a fun hard tail I recommend this bike.

Ride when you can, dream about it when you can't!
