Mason 1

* Required Fields

The Mason 1 is a hard-charging trail bike that plows through the rough stuff, yet remains fun and flickable. Plus-size tires add insane levels of traction and control without adding the weight of a rear suspension system. This hardtail gets the job done with sturdy double-wall wheels wrapped with 27.5x3.0-inch tires. An SR Suntour XCR 34 fork provides 120mm of travel to get you through the rough stuff, while Tektro Aries mechanical disc brakes keep your speed under control. The 1x10 Shimano drivetrain makes shifting simple, meaning no pesky front derailleur to fiddle with while you monster-truck over rocks and roots. Take the trail less traveled? Sure. And with the Mason 1 you’ll be ripping the trail less traveled.

Great bike. Bombs down steep, flow-ey hills like a champ. Not sure about Diamondback's customer service though.

Overall Quality

There's such little information online about the 2019 model of the Mason 1 that I'd love to focus on the bike in this review to help out others interested in the Mason 1, but I'll be honest -- I'm only using the review to complain about Diamondback customer service at the moment (which I think is justified when reviewing a Diamondback product). Maybe I'll come back and give the bike the review it deserves later.

Two of my local bike shop mechanics noticed some weirdness with my rear wheel (there's a joint in my (stock Diamondback brand) rear wheel rim that they said isn't sealed correctly and that it suggests there could be structural deficiencies) and said it could be dangerous to continue riding. They recommended I contact Diamondback and don't ride again until I get a replacement rear wheel.

I submitted a warranty claim to Diamondback a week ago and still haven't heard back from them -- I don't know whether it's unsafe for me to ride on the faulty wheel or not, or whether I qualify for a free replacement wheel or not. Meanwhile, my new Mason 1 is sitting in my garage, unridden, in the first week of what could likely end up being up to a month of no riding.

You would think a structurally compromised stock Diamondback wheel -- something that could easily break while on the trail and send the rider head over heels -- would be something that Diamondback sees as an important issue to resolve quickly.

2 stars: because the bike is pretty sweet for the price, but you might be riding on unsafe parts without knowing it.

Im not sure what is better, the bike or the customer service

I originally ordered a Large frame mason 1 and was impressed with how fast it shipped to me. I took it for a ride to see how it handled and everything was spot on except it was slightly too big for me at 5'10". I called the customer service team to ask if I would be able to get a medium frame instead. Diamondback doesn't do exchanges but I was able to return the large bike and place a separate order for a medium one. I was worried that I had lost money because the bike was no longer on sale the second time I bought it but they told me not to worry because they would do a partial refund to let me buy the new bike at the price of the old one. All of this occurred within the span of a week so I am very impressed at the speed in which they help their customers.
As for the bike itself, It was exactly what I was looking for. I am getting back into mountain biking and I was looking for the best bike I could find for a low budget and the mason 1 hit the mark. This bike's 27.5 plus tires allow for great traction which helps a lot with a hardtail. the forks work great for any beginner to intermediate trails but can easily be upgraded to air forks as you get better and tackle tougher trails. the 1 x 10 drivetrain is perfect for trails as the controls are simple and I didn't feel like I needed any more gears. The mechanical brakes weren't a minus for me as I was easily able to one finger brake and a mechanical system is easier to maintain than a hydraulic one.
I highly recommend this bike to anyone looking for an entry level hardtail that can handle whatever trail you can.
