Our El Oso fat bike really is as much fun to ride as it looks. Throw your leg over it and you may notice most of the bike is pretty standard stuff, at least for Diamondback: a strong and lightweight aluminum frame made with hydroformed tubing, a 100mm travel Rockshox fork, a smooth-shifting Shimano 2×10 drivetrain. If you can keep yourself from looking down as you pedal away, you'll notice it doesn't feel too much different from a normal bike, either. Designed to excel in sand or snow, the high volume / low pressure tires gain purchase on surfaces that have long been unrideable. But you don't have to ride in sand or snow to experience the amazing traction of these tires - a spin on your favorite local trail will have you grinning ear to ear. El Oso does indeed excel on dunes and snow, but it's not limited to them. It's a capable trail bike as well! Wherever you choose to ride it, one thing's for sure: El Oso is a blast.

So much fun!

I have about 50 rides on this bike since I received it in January. I live in Houston, TX, so there is no snow, but there are lots of trails, roots, sand and rain storms that make the terrain challenging. This bike floats over almost anything and holds a really stable line through the deepest sand and tight corners. I am still really impressed how agile this bike is in single track. The component package is on point and the brakes give you plenty of stopping power for any descent. The 4.5" tires give you traction anywhere you point the front wheel. There are a few things that I still desire; the bike is a tank, weighing in over 35lbs. The other thing I don't really care for is the cable routing. The shift and brake lines are attached to small tabs by zip-tie. These zip-ties are small gauge and can break if something snags one of the cables. Also, the cut end of the zip-tie can scratch your legs the way the bike is received due to their location on the frame. I would love to see some more thought put into the cable routing for this model since I feel like the geometry is so on point.

The El Oso is an eye-catcher and gets plenty of attention. It looks great, handles corners and descents well and is a great choice if you're not overly concerned with weight. Quick acceleration is not a strength for this model, and climbing is not too bad as long as you maintain your speed going into that feature. I've taken mine on concrete trails, single track and even dirt jumps (it feels like a motocross bike in the air). You can leisurely float around or be really aggressive with it and it is robust enough to handle all of that and more. I'd love to see an '18 model that is lighter and offers a solution to the zip-tie cable routing. Overall the bike is really as fun to ride as it looks.
