El Oso

Our El Oso fat bike really is as much fun to ride as it looks. Throw your leg over it and you may notice most of the bike is pretty standard stuff, at least for Diamondback: a strong and lightweight aluminum frame made with hydroformed tubing, a 100mm travel Rockshox fork, a smooth-shifting Shimano 2×10 drivetrain. If you can keep yourself from looking down as you pedal away, you'll notice it doesn't feel too much different from a normal bike, either. Designed to excel in sand or snow, the high volume / low pressure tires gain purchase on surfaces that have long been unrideable. But you don't have to ride in sand or snow to experience the amazing traction of these tires - a spin on your favorite local trail will have you grinning ear to ear. El Oso does indeed excel on dunes and snow, but it's not limited to them. It's a capable trail bike as well! Wherever you choose to ride it, one thing's for sure: El Oso is a blast.

Love this bike!

Just another example of how bikes are great! I got this bike because there are sections of ride where I live in Florida that are sand. Sometimes it is just a light dusting other times it is dunes. Still haven't conquered the dunes but way past the traps that would stop me cold on my other bikes. The build is solid a nice collection of bits and bobs. A few odd details but easily polished away. Had an issue with a part and the customer service folks were more than accommodating and got me a replacement ASAP. My only sticking point is that you really can't go tubeless on these rims. They are joined by welds that aren't complete so won't seal. Been working on a hack/bodge picked up online but haven't gotten it to work and need the time to try again. Where we live there are off trail threats that I call Devil heads since they have needle like horns that can decimate non armored tires. They are tiny (5-7 mm) and love to attach to clothing and tires. Tubeless would be so amazing against these tiny beasts. Oh and make sure you have a pressure gauge that can read these ridiculously low pressures accurately! I have several and all have a hard time getting a reading. Right now I think I'm riding in the range between 5 & 10 psi.
The Oso is a great bike that will get you places you just can't visit using thinner tire brethren. This is my second DiamondBack bike.

Since I've bought my el oso I've been riding non stop. I now have two bikes, a cross country diamond back carbon overdrive, and now this bike, and I haven't used the overdrive once since I got this bike, and the overdrive is am amazing bike also. I'm even thinking of selling it because I just don't use it anymore. The fatty has amazing pedaling, and pedals smooth and light, the tires are big and plush, and perfect for traction. If you're looking for a fat bike I definitely recommend this one!

Nice Bike, Great Value

Very nice bike. Great component selection for the price. Bluto fork, deore slx shadow plus rd, hydraulic brakes, race face cranks, threaded bottom bracket, plus nice grips, pedals, and handlebar. Tires are ~ok, this will be the first thing I upgrade. Haven't tried tubeless yet, so not sure how the rims will work for that. Bike seems a little on the heavy side when compared to the competition. Not sure where weight savings can be accomplished yet.

Bike arrived in 3 days and was very well packaged. Assembly was easy. Diamondback provided all the tools needed for assembly (a pretty nifty torque wrench with several bits). Cables and brakes seemed to be well adjusted from the get go ... put it together and go riding. Tubes and rims are set up with presta valves, just something tho keep in mind if you don't have presta capable pump or air gauge.

Sizing is different. The top tube is arched upward so be sure to check the stand-over height when ordering. I'm 5'8" with 31"inseam (measured) and wouldn't want anything bigger than the size small frame.

Overall I am satisfied thus far, especially for the price. I couldn't find anything even close to these specs for the price, even in the used market.

So much fun!

Review by Jason

I have about 50 rides on this bike since I received it in January. I live in Houston, TX, so there is no snow, but there are lots of trails, roots, sand and rain storms that make the terrain challenging. This bike floats over almost anything and holds a really stable line through the deepest sand and tight corners. I am still really impressed how agile this bike is in single track. The component package is on point and the brakes give you plenty of stopping power for any descent. The 4.5" tires give you traction anywhere you point the front wheel. There are a few things that I still desire; the bike is a tank, weighing in over 35lbs. The other thing I don't really care for is the cable routing. The shift and brake lines are attached to small tabs by zip-tie. These zip-ties are small gauge and can break if something snags one of the cables. Also, the cut end of the zip-tie can scratch your legs the way the bike is received due to their location on the frame. I would love to see some more thought put into the cable routing for this model since I feel like the geometry is so on point.

The El Oso is an eye-catcher and gets plenty of attention. It looks great, handles corners and descents well and is a great choice if you're not overly concerned with weight. Quick acceleration is not a strength for this model, and climbing is not too bad as long as you maintain your speed going into that feature. I've taken mine on concrete trails, single track and even dirt jumps (it feels like a motocross bike in the air). You can leisurely float around or be really aggressive with it and it is robust enough to handle all of that and more. I'd love to see an '18 model that is lighter and offers a solution to the zip-tie cable routing. Overall the bike is really as fun to ride as it looks.
