Some might say that full suspension is just a crutch for those who don’t have the guts to go hard charging on a hardtail. If you’re up for it, then so is the Mason 29. The weapons grade 6061-T6 aluminum frame is built tough, and with a low slung, slack geometry it’s plenty maneuverable to take on true All Mountain terrain. The formed and butted tubing balances strength with light weight, and the beefy tapered head tube and 142×12mm rear through axle construction lend some extra muscle for better handling. It all sounds pretty good so far, but add fast rolling, trail hugging 29” wheels a Rock Shox fork and a Race Face Narrowwide 1x setup and you won’t even miss those crutches.

  • Hand built 6061-T6 weapons grade aluminum hardtail frame w/ slack, low slung geometry is ideal for All Mountain riding
  • Rock Shox Sektor 29" fork offers 140mm of butter smooth travel
  • SRAM 10-speed drivetrain for durable performance
  • RaceFace cranks with narrowwide ring offers simplicity and light weight
  • DB AM290 29" wheels are fast rolling

  • Review: Diamondback Mason

To be honest, I kind of figured the Diamondback was going to be a bit of a pig on the tight terrain we call home. From ride one I was proven wrong. That isn’t to say I didn’t have to adjust my riding style. The Mason responds best to speed, body English and stoke, not the typical 29er sit-and-steer Midwest style. I made regular use of the dropper post, which allowed me to both get low and scoot around tight corners, but also absorb impacts and better control the fast and loose riding style this bike thrives on.

  • Exclusive: Video Review – 2013 Diamondback Mason

Pointing a certain finger at current categorization convention, the Diamondback Mason sports the build of an all-mountain 29er on a beefed up XC hardtail should average out to a rig that falls squarely in the trail category, but Diamondback’s Mason is a very different beast than its all-capable full-suspension colleagues.
